BioAge

BioAge – Biological age test

With our biological age test, we analyze your epigenetic biological age in relation to your chronological age, which represents how old your body is compared to the age calculated in the traditional way.

The BioAge test measures the length of your telomeres, the protective caps at the ends of your chromosomes. This provides valuable insights into your current state of cellular health, empowering you to take targeted steps to slow down aging and enhance overall well-being.

In our test analysis, we measure how and where specific methyl groups have modified your DNA and then look at correlation patterns in over 1000 epigenetic markers to estimate your true biological age. BioAge – Biological age test analysis is done in the laboratory from a saliva sample, which is taken with a sampling device that can be easily delivered to your home.

The results can help you understand the key factors influencing your aging process. The test report analyzes the most significant risk factor negatively affecting your biological age, and in addition, you will receive information about other important risk factors presented in a clear and understandable format.

We offer BioAge test reports in English, Swedish, and Finnish.

Individuals from the same generation can age in different ways. For this reason, it is important to identify the molecular markers that can estimate the aging degree of an organism. This BioAge test consists of measuring the average length of telomeric DNA and conducting a BAFF analysis. The test is an analysis that summarizes scientific, demographic, and biological data, based on which the body’s biological and cellular aging is estimated – in contrast to chronological age, which merely counts the years since birth.

This information can be useful to prevent the premature development of problems associated with age, taking into account the possibility of making changes in lifestyle. The aging process is not limited to telomere shortening, however, it is one of the accepted mechanisms, also for humans, on which it is possible to have some control.

When you understand how your lifestyle, stress levels, and overall health may be impacting the aging process, you are able to take more informed steps toward optimizing your well-being and longevity. The goal is to maintain a consistent or younger biological age compared to chronological age through healthy lifestyle choices and habits.

What do you get from the BioAge test:

  • An interpretative index of your biological age
  • Average length of leukocyte telomeres in kilobases (kb)
  • Comparison between your result and the population average
  • Measurement of your BAFF inflammatory level.

The blood sample for the BioAge test is easily taken from the finger tip with a sampling device delivered to your home. We offer BioAge test reports in English, Swedish, and Finnish.

What is a telomere and why do they shorten?

Telomeres are complexes of DNA and proteins present in the chromosomes extremities. These structures protect our DNA from degradation by protecting the ends of chromosomes from shortening due to time, aging, and oxidation effects. Telomeres represent a true biological clock: we are born with telomeres of a certain length that are shortened during the course of our life.

All living organisms are the result of repeated cycles of cell growth and division, that goes back to the beginning of life on Earth. The replication of our DNA is semiconservative and causes shortening of the telomeres in each cell division because the terminal ends of the chromosomes do not completely duplicate; they lose about 150 base pairs (the “bricks” our DNA is made of) at the ends of the DNA molecule.

As the cells divide, the telomeres shorten to a “critical” length that triggers an irreversible cell cycle blockage. This process, called replicative senescence, is the basis of cellular aging of all our tissues: cells lose the ability to divide and our tissues lose the ability to regenerate.

What does the BioAge test mean?

The BioAge test is not a genetic test related to your heredity. Instead, it is a methylation analysis that measures your biological age using the DNA Methylation Clock. DNA methylation refers to a reaction directed at DNA, i.e. the addition or substitution of methyl groups (-CH3) to a compound. This process regulates gene transcription, determining whether a gene is turned on or off. Biological age has been shown to strongly predict future health status and lifespan. Importantly, lifestyle factors can influence gene expression and, consequently, the test results. By making changes that support your health, you can impact gene expression and improve your test outcomes.

The biological age test consists of measuring the average length of telomeric DNA and conducting a BAFF analysis. The DNA analysis measures the average length of the telomeres (LTL) in the white blood cells of your immune system. White blood cell telomere length (LTL) is determined by relating these chromosomal segments to a gene of known length. The BAFF analysis, in turn, evaluates low-grade inflammation by measuring the concentration of B-cell activating factor (BAFF) in the body.

As highlighted by an increasing number of scientific studies, telomere shortening is a physiological process; however, if accelerated, it can be a sign of premature cellular aging. The test provides the customer with a synthetic interpretative index, BioAge, calculated by interpolating the customer’s demographic and biological data with a reference statistical sample.

Why should you take the BioAge test?

Measuring biological age is worthwhile, as it has been shown to be a good predictor of maintaining health and longevity (Lu Horvath 2018). BioAge testing enables the examination of functional markers based on biomarker data from large epidemiological clinical studies.

For example, a 7.5-year increase in biological age compared to chronological age can significantly reduce life expectancy. Correspondingly, a 7.5-year lower biological age compared to chronological age can give significantly more years of life.

Determining and monitoring your biological age can help you see changes over time and understand how diet, lifestyle changes, and anti-aging treatments affect your rate of aging. We have trained health professionals, who are ready to assist you in identifying lifestyle choices that support your health, allowing you to impact your quality of life, overall health, and consequently, your biological age.
